We Are Expanding Our Resources with the BLACK PEARL Cultural Sustainability Fashion Database
BLACK PEARL is building a dynamic database spotlighting brands and designers who tell powerful stories through fashion — stories rooted in culture, identity, and intention. It’s not just about style — it’s about values, voices, and vision.
This is an open call to our community to recommend brands that reflect a more inclusive, thoughtful future of fashion. We’re seeking brands that offer real solutions — from honoring heritage to rethinking waste — and reflect the diversity of the world we live in.
This comprehensive database is being compiled, based on criteria which aligns with the cultural sustainability framework of the pioneering Sustainable Style Guide for Everyone, a free educational resource for sustainable fashion, designed for all who wear clothes, providing knowledge, challenges, and solutions that transcend age, race, gender, disability, geography, disposable income, values, and beliefs.
Alongside BLACK PEARL’s on-going research, we want to include recommended, and are asking our community to recommend the ones who fit the criteria! We aim to profile brands across a diverse spectrum, ensuring that all voices are fairly included.
Who Does this Include?
For our Cultural Sustainability Database we will spotlight brands creating fashion rooted in cultural storytelling, whether through traditional techniques like embroidery, weaving, dyeing, or beadwork. These brands embrace cultural appreciation and elevate diverse identities — from African American to East Asian, Hispanic, Indigenous, South Asian, and more. We’re also seeking brands that represent a fuller, fairer picture of fashion, including those:
Designing Intentionally and Responsibly: Creatives who build with care, purpose, and community in mind.
Serving Diverse Body Needs: With inclusive sizing, adaptive clothing, and garments that honor different bodies and abilities.
Championing Circular Fashion: Through resale, second-hand, or upcycled designs that keep fashion in motion, not in landfills.
Using Sustainable Textiles: Favoring natural, indigenous, low-impact materials that protect the planet.
Practicing Safe Fashion: Avoiding toxic chemicals and prioritizing the health of wearers and makers.
Standing for Ethics and Transparency: Committed to fairtrade, traceability, and the principles of slow fashion.
Uplifting Spirituality and Faith-Based Values: Designing with modesty, intention, and ethical conviction, to ensure our complex society can be fully included.

We invite you to help us to spotlight clothing solutions for varying disposable incomes, lifestyles, occupations, across genders, and more. We believe that if we can expand the understanding of Cultural Sustainability to include the creatives we know are doing the work around the globe, we can help more citizens see themselves in the conversation, and direct their resources to meaningful impact, in stores and
in conversation.
